Transcript Excerpts:

Monika: Really to understand wealth we have to look at all of the amazing abundance that is already in our life.

Nityaananda: The topic of prosperity and spirituality at least in the West often like oil and water. In the context of spirituality, how to understand what is prosperity? What is the proper posture towards wealth of any kind? How to maneuver our way in this material world which is dominated by belief and attachment to wealth as identity? How to maneuver this as spiritual people trying to make a difference in the world?

Monika: Wealth is more than money. Wealth is love, it’s knowledge, it’s friendship, it’s health, it’s community, it’s a sense of well being, peace, compassion. We can be very very wealthy and not have a lot of money. And really to appreciate the great wealth that we have in our lives. And for us of course we have spiritual teachings and a path, a tradition, and teachers to show us and guide the way and that is extraordinary. But we also need prosperity in the form of money, especially in the West because this is a material age; we can’t be sadhus in India living with our begging bowl. So we do need to have wealth in our life, but what is the right use of wealth, and the right acquisition of wealth and the right attitude of wealth? It’s a big subject.

Monika: When we have it (money) it’s also, even if we have a little, how much are we sharing it? Generosity. Generosity, that was Baba teaching us really how to share money, how to give money, how to value the things that are truly valuable, which is why he requested dakshina from people for spiritual teachings or from blessings that he was giving. So to understand the cycle, and it’s natural, the cycle is natural.

Nityaananda: This is just not just our philosophy, these are direct teachings from the palm leaf books, from the ancient knowledge that we study and practice together and share with others who are interested. In the ancient knowledge in the poetic sense they would talk about Lakshmi as representative wealth and prosperity of all kinds. That aspect of the mother, the Divine Mother, that is able to bless anything… So Lakshmi, or the Mother’s blessing energy in the material sense, comes and goes in a natural way, in a cycle, and that’s true for everyone. So just knowing that should help if you are in a down cycle in the Lakshmi energy, in whatever it is, whatever is the prosperity that you’re seeking more of in your life, then accepting that is just a place in the curve with the faith that it will come back around again and that is a true teaching. But beyond that, how can we accelerate that curve?
